Biography
Jim Blinn, a pioneer in computer graphics, earned his Ph.D. from the University of Utah in 1977, where he developed industry-standard techniques like bump mapping, environment mapping, and physically based specular reflection models. At the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, he created iconic animations for Voyager space missions, COSMOS, and The Mechanical Universe, while inventing "blobby" modeling. He later produced animations for Project Mathematics! at Caltech and wrote the influential "Jim Blinn’s Corner" column for IEEE CG&A. As a Graphics Fellow at Microsoft Research, he developed advanced mathematical notations for curves and surfaces before retiring. His work remains foundational to modern computer graphics.
