Stephan Chalup is a Professor at the University of Newcastle, Australia, where he serves as Deputy Head of School (Research and Research Training), Deputy Lead of the Centre for Applied and Responsible AI (CARA), and Director of both the Interdisciplinary Machine Learning Research Group and the Newcastle Robotics Lab. His research spans artificial neural networks, machine learning, and topological data analysis, focusing on foundational questions in neural computation and artificial intelligence. He received his Ph.D. in Computing Science from Queensland University of Technology in 2002, following earlier studies in mathematics and neuroscience at the University of Heidelberg.
