33. In-situ Evaluation of Multimodal Telepresence Using Point Clouds and Floor Vibrations at EXPO 2025
SessionPosters: Art & Design
DescriptionThis paper reports a 70-participant in-situ user study evaluating immersive content delivered via a multimodal telepresence system at the NTT Pavilion, EXPO 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. Fifty general users and 20 visual media experts evaluated three visual stimuli - real-time point clouds, pre-produced volumetric CG, and stereoscopic live-action video - using the Semantic Differential method, combined with floor-based vibrotactile feedback. Point clouds were rated lower in Emotional Response and Immersion than live-action, but achieved comparable ratings in Novelty & Originality, supporting their acceptance as a novel expressive medium. Open-ended responses identified life-sized presentation and a fixed observer-aligned viewpoint as critical factors for co-presence. Floor-based vibrations enhanced spatial reality, while transducer-induced acoustic noise hindered immersion in some cases. These findings, derived from authentic large-scale public exhibition conditions rather than controlled laboratory settings, provide empirically grounded design guidelines for future multimodal telepresence systems.
