Making ChikaBOOM!: AI, Animation, and the Artist-Centered Production Pipeline
DescriptionChikaBOOM! offers a timely case study in how generative AI is being used inside a real animation production pipeline. Written and directed by c. Craig Patterson, the short follows aspiring young magician Chika Batstone as she accidentally unleashes a chaotic magical creature into New York City. In this session, Patterson will unpack how AI supported the making of the film, from creative development and visual exploration through production iteration and final frames. The session will focus on the practical realities of AI-assisted production: what worked, how teams maintained creative control, and what lessons apply to studios, artists, technologists, and production leaders building AI into animation workflows.
