Archiving Media Art and Preserving Obsolete Technologies
DescriptionHow do museums, archives, and libraries steward media artworks built on obsolete or rapidly aging technologies? From CD-ROMs and Flash to early VR headsets, custom hardware, and platform-dependent installations, much of recent media art history runs on systems no longer manufactured or supported. This Birds of a Feather, convened with the LA Media Art Archives Network, brings together archivists, conservators, curators, artists, and technologists to share institutional approaches. Topics may include emulation, migration, documentation, artist interviews, exhibition and archival standards, and the realities of long-term stewardship of media art. Come share challenges and solutions from your own practice. All levels welcome.
